TeslaTech FAQ
What is it
The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver continuously reads data from your car and the energy meters (kWh meters). This data is stored in the cloud and then visualized in user configurable graphs on this website. You can track your car's charging history and cost, and your home's daily energy usage. The TeslaTech CAN Recorder shows you acceleration graphs, BMS data, power meters, and much more. We'll soon add most Cloud Archiver features too.
The TeslaTech Smart Charger automatically switches charging on and off based on available current and/or solar power.
What kind of data is available
All data available on the Tesla server (used by your Tesla app) is logged by the TeslaTech Cloud Archiver every minute to the cloud. The graphs allow you to view the history of that data. You can can view your driving tracks on Google Maps, check speed tracks, charging cycles, battery charging and de-charging, and much more ...Does it work on all Tesla cars
Yep, it works on all Tesla Model S and Model X cars. What makes TeslaTech different and better from other simular products
- No need for a computer to keep permanently active, running a special program.
- We do not ask for your Tesla username and password.
- The data is stored in your personal Cloud account. It's your data, not ours. You can erase the data whenever you want. We actually do not even have access to the data.
- TeslaTech uses custom designed hardware with an embedded CPU which is impossible to hack.
What do I need to view data from my car
You'll need to purchase the TeslaTech Cloud Archiver. Additional features are available if you also purchase TeslaTech Energy Meters, the TeslaTech CAN Recorder and TeslaTech Smart Charger. The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver is a small black box with hardware to connect to the energy meters and a WiFi module to read data from the Tesla serves and push this data to the cloud. To purchase select 'Shop' in the top-left menu. Can I view these graphs on my cars screen
Of course, just use the build-in browser. Note that due to limitations in the Tesla in-car browser not all features are available.Does this need a lot of configuration
The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver needs your WiFi network credentials, your Tesla user name and password (Privacy) and ThingSpeak account keys. These are stored inside the TeslaTech Cloud Archiver, not in the cloud. You'll also need to create your personal cloud-storage ThingSpeak account (Installation). A free account is available for personal use.Is the installation difficult
The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver can be installed anywhere. Just select a spot with good WiFi network access and a 230 Volt power socket. Because it must be connected with a cable to the energy meters the most logical location is near the energy meters. The energy meters must be installed in your electricity box. If you're not a qualified electrician, it's better to have this done for you. TeslaTech can arrange the installation for you.
How many energy meters do I need
The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver works without energy meters, but they do add some nice features. For a single phase system you need one energy meter which can measure the house energy import/export, the tesla energy use and solar panel energy export.
For three phase sysems you'll need one energy meter for each of these functions. For most systems two meters are ok unless you also want to add the solar panel energy export information to the graphs.
The car energy meter is used to measure the power consumption of your car and to detect charging start/stops.
The home energy meter measures the power consumption and production of your house. It is needed for Smart Charging.
Why using an expensive energy meter and not cheap CT's
An analog CT solution is about half the cost of a real energy meter. But the CT solution has many disadvantages. It's notorious tricky to use with 3 Phase networks, it's difficult to detect export currents, it's difficult to detect small currents, and worse the accurancy in practical situations is around 5% but could be as high as 10%.That's why TeslaTech only supports real energy meters which don't have problems detecting import and export currents, work perfectly fine with all networks and are much more accurate.
Check Features to know why you would want to order the energy meters cause they are an option.
Does this work on all types of electricity connections
The energy meters work with all type of networks: Delta network 3 Phase, 1 Phase and Triangle 3 Phase. How is the charging cost calculated
For cars delivered before 15 Jan 2017 SuperCharging is free. Cars delivered after this date get 400kWh free SuperCharging starting every year at the date of delivery. The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver keeps track of your total SuperCharging energy, once the 400kWh has been used the cost is calculated based on the SuperCharging location. Costs are different for each country. For home charging you can set two price levels. Each level starts at a user configurable time. You can also define which of the levels are used for each weekday. This system is typically used with a day/night tariff. The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver reads the actual energy used from the energy meter and calculates the charging cost based on the charging time and price levels. The system also takes into account Winter/Summer time or Daylight Saving Time.
The cost at a charging point is calculated with a fixed price/kW. We'll add a charge-point price once these prices are easily accessible on the internet.
Currencies
All indicated prices are in your local currency. You can select your currency in the TeslaTech Cloud Archiver configuration. If you travel with your car and use for example a SuperCharger in a country with another currency the cost is converted to your currency. A currency conversion table is downlaoded daily. What is the TeslaTech CAN Recorder
That's a second 'black-box' which connects to your cars CAN plug. Don't worry, it's very easy to install.Smart Charging
Yep, smart charging is possible. The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver can automatically switch charging on and off based on your requirements. You can decide to only charge your car when solar power is available. This will prevent payment charges for pushing current on the local network. The Flemish government is planning to introduce these in the near future.
You can also arrange that the car stops charging when your home power connection risks to get overloaded. Example: you have a 20 Amp connection and your car is charging at 16 Amps. You start cooking a delicious meal but your oven requires 10 Amps. The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver will stop the charging and restart charging when power is available again.
TeslaTech Smart Charger
A 32 Amp Smart Wall Charger to charge one or two cars. It includes relays, fixed 6 meter charging cables, a TeslaTech Cloud Archiver module and optional the Tesla Energy meter. The TeslaTech Smart Charger uses a special upgraded version of the TeslaTech Cloud Archiver which includes the necessary hardware to control the charger and allows Smart Charging.Yearly cost
All products include a free one year subscription. The subscription is needed to cover the costs of the cloud storage and software licenses. Pricing will be made available later, but we'll keep these as low as possible.Ideas are welcome
Do you want additional or improved graphs, or do you have an idea on how to improve the functionality, just tell us about your idea. We'll add it asap. Can I print or export the data
Click on the bars icon in the top right corner of a graph. You can print the graph, export it as a jpg or excel file, etc...You can, for example, export the charging history to an Excel spreadsheet.
How much historical data can I see
The Charge History and Daily Energy Use graphs show all historical data. For the car data the last 130 hours of driving and/or charging are shown. When the car is parked and asleep no data is registered.
The data of the energy meters is registered every minute. Currently you can see the last 8000 data points which is about 6 days. We're working on an upgrade to show you more historical data.
Will my car go to sleep mode
Yes. You can configure the operating mode yourselves. Either the car is polled continuously and never sleeps, or it is never polled only using the energy meters, or it is polled while it drives and charges, but not polled when parked.OTA updates
The TeslaTech Cloud Archiver will automatically install firmware updates OTA. Updates include patches and new features. All new features are lifetime free.Data Availability
Data pulled from the Tesla servers uses the not open Tesla API. If Tesla changes this API or changes the availability of its data servers this might interrupt the registration of historical data.Of course data retrieved from the energy meters and CAN bus is never interrupted. Although sometimes the data might not be registered in the cloud database. This happens when WiFi and/or 3G/LTE access is down or when the ThingSpeak Cloud service is interrupted.
TeslaTech is not responsible for these service interruptions.
